AURORA, Colo. (KTRK) –A lunch lady is out of a job because she gave free lunches to students who didn’t have any money.

According to the Denver Post, Della Curry, 35, was the Cherry Creek School District’s kitchen manager. She says she would often see students crying because of hunger and no lunch money.

Classic. Some people have irresponsible guttersnipes for parents. They make enough money to keep themselves happy, but could not care less if Juniors lunch account has been paid up.

So I guess we'd rather punish this gal and the hungry kid, rather than go after the jack wagon parents that could not be bothered to either pay up or fill out a couple of forms for free lunch?

Kindness, compassion, and common sense seem to be in short supply with the powers that be in that school district!

I don't understand why the school counselors were not informed and plan to deal with the situation was not developed. Either the kids were lying or the parents were being negligent but this is something the school should have dealt with, not fire the lunch lady. Sounds like bad management and lack of communication.

I don't know about your local school districts, but this is commonplace where I live.

LOL..only "poor" children can get a free lunch in that school.

If you're not poor then starve must be the motto there.

So the USDA lunch program doesn't care about ALL kids, just the poor ones.

The district has released a statement that basically says Della Curry outright lied to the media while legally enjoining the district from disclosing the real reason she was fired.

"Ms Curry was not dismissed for giving free food to financially disadvantaged students. Numerous documented incidents resulted in the action taken by the Cherry Creek School District. Currently, we are unable to fully disclose all of the details concerning her dismissal without her permission, which she presently has declined to give. Should she change her mind, we will release all of the information associated with this investigation."

And now she is refusing to speak to the media.

Statement is on the district front page for now: http://www.cherrycreekschools.org/Pages/default.aspx

Voluntary charity is a blessing
Compulsory charity is a curse

Giving away other people's money is easy
Giving away your own - now THAT is something else

Why are people so quick to believe the statement of one person telling a tale to the Media without first researching the facts as you have ? For all we know, this woman was giving these lunches to her relatives.

Still, people will come here and post about this "wonderful, generous woman" simply because she says she is and not bother to get the real story.
