I'm sorry, but is this really necessary? How is celebrating our national independence day inside our own embassy some affront to Islam now? This wasn't necessary before but now it is?

No, it's un-American. End of discussion.

Like most American Government offices, the Embassies are usually closed on US national Holidays, such as the 4th of July.

The celebrations are held at home.
This year the embassy decided to hold an Office Party on June 4th so that the Muslim staff could participate. I believe the American staff will still be celebrating at home on the 4th of July like usual.

The Embassy in Jakarta is still going to be closed on July 3 for 4th of July as the 4th is on Saturday. No change in the 4th of July for Embassy staff.

Normally I am not a fan of Islam's constant special pleadings and demands. However, to the extent embassy employees are locals and needed for the holiday, I have no problem with moving the observance. After all an embassy is a "guest" in that country.

I have more problems with Indonesia's refusal to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.
