Why would people celebrate a war they lost? Why would people celebrate a war that threatened the very unity of the United States? Why would people celebrate a war brought on by traitors? How can people be 'proud' of that history?????????????
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Most of the southern states are in pretty bad economic trouble today, and have been for a long time. I wonder how much worse off they'd be if they had won the war and weren't getting all those federal dollars grabbed from the Northeast states and handed over to the southern states?
Probably all be starving or living extremely marginal lives.
People celebrate those they lost fighting a horrific war to protect their independence, families and farms. At the time it was not against the constitution to secede, so there goes your "traitor" name calling. The war was brought on by the union to stop the secession.
This. The flag was, fairly or unfairly, appropriated by racist groups trying to push back civil rights for blacks. It's worth noting it wasn't flown on SC capitol grounds until 1961 - a deliberate middle finger in the direction of blacks who had the nerve to think they could use the same lunch counters as their betters.
One way to marginalize racism is to marginalize the casual display of racist symbols.
Roof also targeted Jews and Hispanics in his manifesto. And he said he was going to start with the Blacks first.
UT is convening its board about the removal of the Jefferson Davis statue on it's campus.
Students are offended by the presence of the statue on campus.
They should remember Stephen Austin permitted and arranged for slavery to enter Texas.
I think people were upset and rightly so about the killings in Charleston. Our society today is always looking to blame someone or something when bad things happen. In this case the murderer affiliated himself with the Confederate battle flag. Then John Stewart, whom I generally like and respect, in his frustration, decided to target the Confederate flag as part of the problem. Then the media in general jumped on the band wagon, along with the politicians whose primary interest is TV face time and votes and this was a ticket to one or the other or both. Suddenly the Confederate flag is the root of all evil.
In the end, 4,000 years of world wide slavery and all the injustice associated with slavery is now distilled into hate focused on a few rebellious states that formed their own county and a flag that barely existed for 4 years.
Sometimes I wonder if the rest of the country hates the south so much, why did you fight to keep us in the Union to start with? Why do you keep moving down here in droves if you think we are a bunch of backwoods, gun toting, racist, morons? Do you hear how stupid that sounds? The Civil War was 150 years ago. Get over old symbols and learn to face the fact that some times there are just bad people that do bad things to other people. Deal with them as they need to be dealt with and stop trying to put the blame on the short comings of today's society on symbols from ancient history.

And no mention of Roof also targeting Jews and Hispanics next after the Blacks.
This was not a White vs Black, slavery in the South issue.
Do flags kill people? Do guns kill people? Or is isn't more likely that people kill people? The young man that committed this atrocity is solely to blame, not any inanimate object. It is a shame that traditions can survive if they are completely benign or meaningless. To take away someone's heritage is not right. I am not talking about a Nazi flag or the like, which are clearly un-American. But sometimes, to really understand, to really appreciate something, you have to accept that it is probably flawed. Take the US flag. Could that be construed as offensive to Native Americans? Point is, you cannot please everyone all of the time. Quit trying to. It looks bad cause it s bad.
I say we change the American flag too. Lets just come up with some new flag that has no history. Flying an American flag mean you support everything done while it has been flown.

Whereas citizens of the southern states seized the Property of the United States.
Whereas citizens of the southern states fired upon the soldiers of the United States.
Whereas citizens of the southern states made war against the United States.
Whereas Article III Section 3 of Constitution of the United States states;
Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.
Any time you give a fool an inch, they want a mile. The states that are affected should say hell no we are not taking down our monuments and we are not changing any names to please the idiots of this country. Enough of this BS.
