Good for you, AnesthesiaMD. It's important in any workplace for the boss to set the tone.

In the incident in question, you have to wonder what made this doctor think her comments would be tolerated. She must have known that was way out of line. I would guess this is covered in medical ethics classes, as well as by senior doctors such as yourself.

Isn't it fairly well known that even with Versed some patients will have an element of awareness and/or recall?

Occasionally, versed has no effect on a patient. Over the years I have even had patients under complete general anesthesia with a breathing tube, gas, the whole nine yards, tell me they remember hearing us talking about skiing (or whatever) during the surgery. They don't remember feeling anything, or seeing anything (eyes are taped shut anyway during GA) but they remember hearing stuff. Auditory recall is the most common type of recall during surgery.

MY! Haven't we've become very thin skinned that we worry so much what people are saying behind our back.

Would I like it? No.......but considering the number of people who like to rake me over the coals on the Net, it is thick skin and other defenses.

When it comes to medicine and the like, where one technician insults you about the poor way you take care of your body and another doesn't, the effect I see is that the former discourages you from seeing your doctor regularly and the other does not.

Of course, I might wonder how much he or she is really thinking about me as a person when they come in, talk a mile a minute, examine you, work on you, tell you what needs to be done, and then leave the assistant to handle your questions........but perhaps what matters is that they do the procedure right.

Unless you're paying people for some service on the net, I don't see the comparison.

I'm assuming if you went into a store and they insulted you, that would be fine due to your thick skin, but not everyone is like you.
