Straight men hate gay men because gay men threaten their masculinity. Straight women on the other hand don't have a problem with Lesbians. In our patriarchal society, men are raised to believe that they need to be masculine.

A person who "couldn't care less about gay issues" is not a homophobe.

I think the study is spot on.

There's a difference between a homophobe and someone who is indifferent/does not care.

I agree. I've always observed men become much more defensive around gay men. Lots of stupid, unfunny jokes. Near fear of a gay man. Often outright asserting their masculinity. But I rarely if ever see women react the same way to a lesbian woman. Women just don't care about homosexuality, from what I observe, the way men do. It's odd (the men - not the women's reaction).

Well, somebody clearly does, given the level of his response to this thread

I agree. Assuming someone to be 'homophobic' if they dont agree with homosexuality to me is like assuming fear or a latent desire to be male/female a if you dont happen to prefer heterosexual intimacy. Life isnt quite that simple nor are complex humans that easy to figure out.

People who are comfortable with their own sexuality couldn't care less what other consenting adults do.
