I doubt very much that it was a reason for his effort to seek help for the officer.

You can have little respect for the property of others or be more interested in getting high than staying out of jail and still care about the physical well being of others. I taught a fare number of students through the years that I felt were good, caring people but who ended up clashing with society's rules which earned them a stay in a penal facility. They didn't stop being kind people at their core, they just lost their way at some point.

He's still a kid, he still has a chance to get his act together. Maybe this act and the positive accolades will be what turns his life around.

Troubled teen, others honored for saving Fort Lauderale officer - Sun Sentinel

Quote:
At the time of the incident on Sept. 10, Rutledge was being booked for a probation violation on various charges, including burglary. He has since had other arrests but, in an interview with the Sun Sentinel last week, indicated he would like to reform his ways.

"I want to write a book", Rutledge said, "about how people do bad things but they can change their life around."

This isn't particularly surprising.

Though a lot of people like to think of criminals as monolithically bad, as something akin to sociopaths, reality is more complicated that such trite and simplistic explanations - most people in trouble with the law make bad choices and do bad things but are nonetheless people who empathize and are capable of caring for their fellow human beings.
