something like this should be listed in course description before class is taken, with plenty of disclaimers and warnings...so the student has NO excuses for not doing the required class work
I don't really want to read tranny porn...or tranny soft porn...or tranny romance...or tranny adventures...and I would NOT take a class if THIS caitlan jenner liberal agenda were being crammed down my throat...but there should be ample warning
Assigned reading should not violate religious beliefs. You don't pay $40,000 a year to have your child taught to sin. It is about time someone spoke up.

Not all books are designed to teach. They are also designed to tell stories.
What I want to know is how did these students manage to get accepted into a university like Duke without knowing the meanings of the words "suggested" and "voluntary"?

I am a retired librarian that knows about books. Read anything you want to but assignments should not be controversial if you want to continue teaching in this state. If it is just suggested and not mandatory I have no problem with it. Duke is known to have high moral standards. They don't want to lose that. I personally don't like to read trash stories either. Some books make you want to puke.

Graphic Novel = comic book = University level reading?

It was the late ambassador and commentator Carl Rowan who observed that "People who wear their religion like a badge usually want to inflict it on everybody else." And if we expand the definition of "religion" to include someone's psycho-sexual values (common practice in all of Western monotheism), then that's what's going on here -- and on a pretty juvenile level on both sides of the issue.

A graphic novel isn't the same as a comic books. It can contain themes and motifs and points of discussion, just like any other media that's used in a college class, like film or art. Graphic novels like Maus or Persepolis or Jimmy Corrigan are wonderful and would be great teaching tools.
Besides, the musical Fun Home won a boatload of Tony awards this year, so they're trying to keep the curriculum current.
