John Gibson was a pastor and seminary professor. When he wasn't teaching at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, one of his favorite pastimes was fixing cars.
He was married with two children. His daughter, Callie, was teaching in front of 250 college students when she got the call. Her father had killed himself.
It was August 24, six days after hackers exposed the names of millions of people who had signed up for Ashley Madison, the notorious site for those seeking affairs. Gibson's name was on the list.
CNN is also reporting that a number of other suicides are being investigated to determine whether they are related to the Ashley Madison scandal. Not that I have any sympathy for people who cheat on their spouses, but it's a tragedy when someone feels they need to take their life over something like this, and compound the pain they've already inflicted on their families. My sympathies to their loved one.
My sympathies to the families as well. I can't imagine being on that website would be that much of an 'end of the world' deal to cause someone to take their own life. Perhaps these people had other issues going on that pushed them over the edge.
While I don't condone adultery in any way, I'm not sure this hacking was necessarily doing a 'public service'. That said, people need to understand that risky behavior on the internet can come back to bite you.

It sounds like selfishness may be the root cause of both actions, AM and then suicide.
There isn't anything remotely honorable by avoiding personal pain in a manner that exponentially compounds the pain one has already thrust upon innocent loved ones.
A number of years ago Jimmy Swaggart was *outed* by a jealous competitor preacher for visiting a prostitute …
He tearfully confessed on live TV, was disciplined by his denomination, forgiven by his family … and then not long after was once again busted with a professional paid sex worker ...
Wow, a religious Hypocrite, who would have ever thought......
Any person that cheats is a hypocrite and in some states a potential felon.
