Great. Kid gets an F and grows up to be as ignorant as his mother. Just what this country needs.
Learning the basic tenets of one of the world's major religions, a religion which drives current events and politics, is not the same as proselytizing, which is not allowed. It boggles my mind that people do not understand this difference. Pretty scary isn't it?
It is impossible to completely disallow the study of religion, if one wants to have an understanding of history. It also heavily influences literature. We shouldn't pretend it doesn't exist; doing so will leave a huge gap in one's education.
Pure ignorance. It's a World History course. I expect this mother to be equally outraged when her child has to learn about Shintoism when they get to the chapter on Japan, and Buddhism and Taoism in the chapter on China, otherwise she is nothing more than a world class hypocrite.
Seriously, 7th grade world history? Sorry, you don't get into any religion's beliefs and practices. You learn the major religion for each empire/nation, but not it's teachings. The teacher has an agenda and should be fired. We all know that won't happen though.
They're not "teaching Islam," for god's sake - they're teaching about Islam. That it exists, what the history of the culture is.
Knowledge gets in the way of proper hate. Had a colleague who grew up in East Germany, during Communism's heyday. The Communist school system had the same attitude to teaching about the West as US conservatives have towards Islam: It's bad, really bad, and we don't want you to know anything else. In fact, you'd better not be curious if you know what's good for you.
Islam isn't a country, nor an historical event. Terrible analogies.
No, it is only one of the most important religions in the world responsible for some of the most memorable events in human history and the foundation for a number of civilizations.
God help our society. How many people actually use their brains anymore?
As a history teacher, this entire story is horrifying. I have regularly tasked students with studying a number of religions and controversial political/social beliefs (Anarcho-Syndaclism, anyone?) never with the intent of indoctrination but hoping to expand understandings. We are doing our part as a collective to shut ourselves off from reality, and it is disconcerting.
