More than anything this reminds me how in the early 70s when I was a young teen, how it was socially acceptable, often expected, for blue collar men to have nude playboy pinups at their work bench. Now it is rare to see such pinups, probably due to concerns of sexual harassment. And how it was socially acceptable for my barber to have a collection of playboys and penthouses in the magazine rack. So it is not just online compitetion that has decreased playboy sales, it is also changing public acceptance of nudes.
Some of that is sexual harassment for sure. Some of that was the outrage of the Meese Commission in the 1980's. Remember, Playboys and other dirty magazines were considered obscene and pulled from convenience store shelves for some time because of this (I can say in the 1990's they were back in.) That and Maxim and similar magazines are suitable replacements in the marketplace for barber shop reading material.
I don't think Hefner has any regrets, he's just ready to take the magazine in a new direction. he didn't want to be in the porn business or Hooters business. He has a legacy and doesn't want to do anything to sully that IMO just to make a buck.
Playboy was never about cheap thrills like Hooters, it was about women as art, and sexual revolution and freedom. Hef changed the world with this magazine, and that is partially because he always strove to make it sophisticated, not cheap.
Baloney. Hugh Hefner is a dirty old man who preyed on young girls who would have sex with him as a shortcut to celebrity status. You should read what some of the woman have said about "Hef" and what he demanded to move up the bunny foodchain.

When Hef started Playboy in the 1950's he wasn't a dirty old man at all. He wasn't even 30 when the first Playboys. He hasn't been the real boss in years after his 1986 stroke when he passed the torch to his daughter Christie. Since then, he's just the figure-head so it isn't like say a Vince McMahon Jr. situation. If you are going to lambaste the guy and the company, at least get your facts straight.
I can't say that Playboy had the kind of impact on my life that is described in the opening post, but the magazine in its traditional format is a part of Americana, nudie pics and all. In fact, it was the nudes that made the magazine part of the fabric of life. For a generation--or two--of American boys, those sneak peaks at Playboy were a rite of passage.
Sneaking a look at Playboy was part of early adolescence, a sign that you were no longer a little kid, even if you didn't quite fully understand that you were moving into a new stage of life. When you started buying your own copies, you were further into adolescence. When you didn't see Playboy as any big deal anymore, you were knocking at the door of young adulthood. When your dad openly shared his Playboys with you, or even bought you a subscription (I knew a guy whose dad did this), it was just about time to move into your own place to live, because you were practically grown.
Those milestones marked by Playboy's nudes were part of growing up. So once again, say it ain't true, Hugh!
Well there were always the case of celebrities in Playboy at some point. I mean that was one of the cornerstones when you saw a then on-the-rise Marilyn Monroe on the pages of one of the first Playboy magazines.
This rebranding is just a desperate last attempt to save itself. I doubt it will work. Playboy has been circling around the drain for quite some time. Its demise is nigh.

I have seen and read biographies on Hefner, and not just blurbs on Entertainment Tonight. I disagree with you. That is contrary to everything I have seen and heard from and about him. I believed he loved women and cherished them. Maybe it's because I grew up in a different time, but I believe Playboy empowered women and liberated them as much as NOW did, although in a much different way. He fought to give women power and not just sexual, his was one of the first companies to put women in power in corporate positions. I think he was an amazing man and has lived an amazing life, and would recommend you do a little more in-depth reading of him if you really care to debate that.

Yeah, I would say the 1950's stuff was basically loving the female form like say the Demi Lovato Vanity Fia photo shoot I previously mentioned. Remember Playboy didn't "show pink" until AFTER you had Penthouse and Hustler do it. That said, I wouldn't say Playboy didn't objectify women, especially with the clubs. The issue is the public perception of it.
when is the last time they had non-airbrushed/doctored photos, 1960?
"ok ladies, no matter how beautiful you are, we hired professional artists to fix your photos. All of them." Lol, yeah, so respectful to women. I would say the ultimate insult...
Every single issue of every single print magazine does this. All. Of. Them.
