Anybody who wants Family SAFE home defense can just keep a simple shotgun slide -- the slide ONLY -- next to the bed or couch … Any intruder/burglar hearing a shotgun slide being operated will run AWAY as fast as her/his little feet will go ...
That is quite possibly the dumbest idea ever. In human history.

I'd agree. Having a fake gun, or a real gun without the will and skill to use it, is more dangerous than not having one at all. In both cases, one is presenting an apparent threat without the means/will to back it up, which is more likely to precipitate further aggression. It is a rare individual that can successfully bluff his way out of a situation like that. The lack of confidence will most likely be detected and cause the aggressor to attempt to strike first, before you can injure him by accident.
If one cannot make good on the threat, then not appearing to be a threat at all presents the better chance of survival...however slim that might be.
Merely having a gun and waving it about, hoping to *scare* your aggressor is a Very Bad Idea. If you don't have the will to use it and live with the result, don't pick it up at all.
FACT: Gun deaths are minuscule compared to the deaths, disease, child neglect & abuse, broken families, and the overall cost to society that alcohol is responsible for.
This is why you can not take anti gun people seriously because if they were concerned about a "safer society" they would be viciously attacking alcohol users and alcohol producing companies. They can't because the alcohol industry brings in huge amounts of tax dollars. So I guess money trumps the "kids"

Or gun stores, gun shows or firing ranges. Think about it.
