Florida PDS and their officers don't exactly have a stellar reputation.

I'm glad an outside source was in charge of this investigation. Greatly lessened the chance of a cover up, as was proven.

Where in the background investigation of this man was something missed?
He passed a lie detector or VSA.. he passed an extensive background investigation... he completed a basic police academy.. he passed a basic psych test... but it is possible after all this to have someone slip through,,, it is also possible after a policeman has been on for awhile to certainly go astray from their mission statement and ethical behavior (which is why progressive departments have on going ethical merit bars to reach as well as healthy supervision)

Hiring today is less stringent than when I came on.. because police come from society...and our society is in trouble.. lack of morality.. free drug use.. selfish behavior rules..... when I was hired no drug use was tolerated.. now some departments will hire if there is no drug use in the past year. When I was hired you could not have a criminal record OR traffic record other than one citation in your history

Now some departments will hire people with misdemeanor convictions or past bad driving (what a fun day for a civil attorney for negligent hiring)

Electronic monitoring might help.. we are testing a real time video system where what the officer sees is also seen by dispatch and a watch commander real time... it is incredibly expensive... but it is in planning stage

This is disgusting and certainly troublesome to me.. but the system worked and he was caught... and like those before him it will not go well for him in prison where he will be in constant seg,, and a target. Right now every case he was involved in is being reviewed and his electronic logs are being poured over for any further evidence of crime

As far as the poster who said it would be swept under the rug... get real... people like me would give our left nut to hook this guy

I feel bad for his wife and kids... weird sick pervert

Registering one day when he gets out as a sex offender will be little justice

Some things deserve the death penalty...

I noted in the same online rag the next story in line was about Bill Myers.. a Okaloosa deputy who was killed by a suspect during a domestic violence warrant service,, he was an leo of honor..who came out of retirement because the need was so great.... sorry his story isnt here to balance out this pervert story

You are wrong about Peter T. The investigation showed that he had visited an ordinary porn site, and NOT one containing child pornography.

Get your story straight.

I know. The truth is so inconvenient every time it pops up.

Well, there's another blow to my overall faith in humanity.

That said, we do have to find better ways to lessen the stigma for people like this to seek treatment before they go off the rails. Studies show that a given percentage of basically every population will have a predilection towards pedophilia, these people will always exist. There are genetic links that are suspected, abnormal fetal brain development has been linked to pedophilia, as well as those who undergo abuse themselves as children. What we've been doing, further pushing them underground, making it more difficult for them to seek treatment has not worked at all. The desires that these people have never go away but the decision for them to act on those desires, whether it is downloading child pornography or abusing children directly, is theirs and theirs alone. It is a choice to act and something that someone must be encouraged to get treatment for to hopefully prevent its occurrence.

In Europe, various countries have had some success by encouraging these people to come out of the shadows, by offering them treatment without a stigma attached to it, without being put on any list before they become offenders. The more connections that they build, the more support they have, the less likely it seems to be that someone will cross that line. Its when these folks are left up to their own devices that we should really worry. Doing the head in the sand routine and pretending that these people just don't exist, waiting for them to act to respond hasn't worked thus far.

Sadly people forget that cops are HUMANS and subject to the same issues as the general population but because these HUMANS put on a badge every day for WORK they somehow should be immune to the HUMAN condition.
I wonder if a garbage man/woman was sitting in his/her truck doing the same thing if there'd be the vitriol and outright hatred towards that person?
Somehow I highly doubt it...

We need to completely revamp the background check system we have for choosing police officers

Uh, yeah.
If they were looking at kid porn, they would get the exact same outraged and disgusted reaction from me.

This is different, too. The man is on duty. His duty is not picking up trash. It's protecting the citizens of his area. Instead of doing his duty to protect them, he is victimizing them.

Get the difference?
