I don't get it. Conservatives are all about "family values", but then when someone wants employees to enjoy family time on a holiday, they get mad and claim that big government and socialism are destroying the workforce. Thanksgiving is ONE DAY!! Let the employees have it off, and they can work the next day.

I'd have to check the thread again, but I don't think anyone mentioned conservatives or socialism or government or anything here. Not every controversy has to be split along party lines.

Exactly my thought - why is it "political" or "controversial" when I store decides to Open or Close?
That is purely (except in the areas that still have old Blue Laws) that is (and should be) left up to the owners of a business.

I guess it must be part of that "You didn't build that" and so the Left thinks they can tell Business owners what to do with their open/close timetable. How tiring.

Did anyone ever stop and think those in retail might need that money?

Who else shouldn't work on holidays? Policemen, firemen, fast food shops, restaurants, hospitals? You are forgetting about people of other faiths and people of no faith. Can the whole country take a holiday?

I remember working on Christmas eve when I was a teen. Got my money and spent it all on presents. Didn't kill me.

Private businesses should be able to have staff whenever they want/need them. Who are we to tell others how to run their businesses?

stores didn't open on Thanksgiving until a couple of years ago. And people somehow survived!

retail workers aren't saving lives like cops and hospital workers.

I also worked on holidays when I waited tables while in college. It sucked! 3 or 4 years in a row I missed time with my family.

No one is telling anyone what do to. Stores can remain open 365 days a year if they want. I just happen to think those that remain closed on Thanksgiving, allowing many people to enjoy the holiday is wonderful.

there are 363 other days people can shop.

When you own your own business you can close it any time you want. Until then, stop telling other business owners how to run their businesses.

This isn't a controversy, it's a complaint by people who don't want to work on Thanksgiving. Acutally, it's a complaint by people ON BEHALF for others who may have to work on Thanksgiving. Even on behalf of those who would like to work on Thanksgiving. There is no pleasing everyone.

A controversy (maybe I'm using a loose definition of the word) could be whether or not it's a good idea, and that's actually a pretty tough question to answer. I can guarantee that a lot of companies are investing manpower in figuring this out.

It's not a good or bad idea across the board, it will be different for every company and every employee.
