Quite sad to say that's the first thing that popped into my head as well.

And that's only because so many of these incidents against Blacks ended up being done by Blacks.

I am afraid that an African-American student might have done that. I hope not. There must be cameras everywhere, so they should be able figure this out.

I don't understand this vandalism. Black tape is a symbol of mourning, worn by those who are in mourning. It is very firmly established as this symbol. And the tape was put on the glass of the portrait, the least damaging area to vandalize. Looks very much like an attempt at a symbolic protest that was incorrectly interpreted and spun into anonymous vandalism.
