I think no matter how loud the minority shouts, the majority of the country agrees that we should not be in the business of shutting down religious freedom or the freedom to not believe in any religion at all.
Using a mosque as a foil to incite people i snot “religious freedom”. Mosques have been used for all sorts of purposes throughout Islam. You don’t have to go to the 7th century for examples. In Iraq they were using them as arms depot, sniper towers, headquarters to plot and execute attacks etc. For years the US military was kept out of these mosques using exactly the phony reasoning you are bringing up. Lives were lost because of it.
Are they inciting killings at Sunday mass? What would you do if they did?
First off, there are no preachers in mosques like there are in churches, no one is inciting anything. Second, this is not happening in mosques, this is happening on Facebook and Twitter and SnapChat, THAT is where they are recruiting Isis followers, not mosques.
So should we shut down those social media sites? Exactly how far away from the founding principles of this country are we willing to go for the illusion of safety?
Very few Muslims are Mideastern. The majority of us are Asiatic. Most Arabs and Iranians in the US are Christians.
That may have been true decades ago, with immigration that isn't true anymore. This pie chart from wikipedia shows about a quarter of Muslims are "Arab" — which isn't quite the same as Middle Eastern.
Allahu Akbar is more like our God is greater or the greatest as the term is used to differentiate from polytheist as they recognize that other folks believe in different gods.
I do not believe a temporary shut down would be unacceptable. Although this may seem harsh, this is not an easy situation.
What "situation"? Right Wing politicians pandering to the same kind of bigotry and fear that landed Japanese Americans in internment camps during WW II?
The idea that things like this are even being discussed is very disturbing. Over on the PO&C forum there is an thread where a considerable number of posters (all of whom are extreme far-right Trump supporters) think that it's ok to just ban American citizens from owning firearms just because they happen to be Muslims.
I have always considered myself to be pretty conservative and I am a registered Republican but as of late it seems that the GOP is becoming more and more of a right wing populist party and less of a "constitutionalist" party. The US Constitution plainly says that we have religious freedom but here we have all these faux "conservatives" saying that Muslims should be denied fundamental rights, Mosques should be shut down en masse, and we should create a massive police state apparatus. It seems that a significant (and growing) portion of the GOP base believes that constitutional liberties should only apply to White Christians and Jews, and the Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, etc are incapable of being "real Americans".
Huh? WTF?
I'll echo the other poster and say thank you, too. The fact that most Republicans aren't wimpy cowards who would trash the Constitution at the drop of a hat gets lost in the squealing of the Trumplettes who talk tough but run and hide at the first sign of trouble just like their hero.
