I wonder if Turkey was more likely to pull something like this BECAUSE of its inclusion in NATO. "Starting" fights because it's got bigger brothers to finish them for it.
Do y'all feel that plane deserved to be shot down due to THAT incursion? Then again, an incursion is an incursion. KAL 007, cough, cough.
Thanks for the link, that's the first proof of what happened.
I posted this in another thread, but since this is the main thread on the discussion I wanted to put it here as well.
Turkey has warned Russia multiple times over the last few months about not entering it's airspace. Russia has continued to ignore Turkey. Turkey issued an ultimatum last month to Russia about violating its airspace. Turkey warns Russia over airspace violation - Al Jazeera English
Add to Turkey's anger that Russia refuses to respond to any radio communications/warnings and continues to keep their transponders turned off. Russia has been doing this for decades, and it was just a matter of time before something like this happened.
From my other thread post.
"Russia bombers have recently (about 1000 times in the last 2 years) flow near (or over) the border of Guam, California, Alaska, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Japan, S. Korea, Germany, Turkey, Estonia, Poland, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia (west of Latvia, not in Russia), and Ukraine. And Russia is shocked, I tell you shocked, that this could happen. Russia is also so shocked that countries are lining up to join NATO or be affiliated with NATO, even it's old Soviet republics and allies. Well, one just has to look at what they are doing and understand why. Those countries do not feel safe with Russia and for good reason. Finally, a country (Turkey) had enough of Russia's crap. I don't understand what Russia is trying to do. They are trying to make themselves look strong and relevant, and they are just looking foolish and petty. And worse, they are worsening relations with nearly everyone around them and yet they continue to point the blame at NATO. If Russia didn't see this coming, they are more foolish then we realized."
The other problem is that while they are doing great things against ISIS, they are also supplying (or supposedly supplying) the Syrian Kurds who want to fight against Turkey.
I believe part of the blame does lie with the US, we should be working with Russia right now on destroying ISIS. If we were there, this communication breakdown might not have happened, but that's a big if.
26 June 2012:
Mr Erdogan spoke of Turkey's "rage" at Syria's decision to shoot down the F-4 Phantom last Friday and described Syria as a "clear and present threat".

German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel called Turkish actions unpredictable.
“This incident shows for the first time that we are to dealing with an actor who is unpredictable according to statements from various parts of the region – that is not Russia, that is Turkey,” Gabriel said, as cited by DPA news agency. He added that Turkey was playing “a complicated role” in the Syrian conflict.

The US does not want Russia involved in fighting ISIS.
And the US is buddy buddy with Turkey even though Turkey is playing both sides of the fence here.
Although violations happen with frequency between the two countries, Turkey and Greece have seen a rapid increase in incidents since 2013. In the first month of 2014 alone, Turkish aircraft allegedly violated Greek airspace 1,017 times, Gurcan reports. This was twice the number of total airspace violations between the two countries for the first half of 2013.
The US military said it couldn’t offer a precise location where the Russian jet was downed by Turkey, only saying that it happened "at the border" between Syria and Turkey.
When asked to confirm Turkish accounts that the Russian plane was warned ten times before being engaged, Steve Warren, a spokesman for the US-led military campaign against Islamic State, said: "I can confirm that. Yes."
However, he didn’t specify whether the US knew this independently, or if it was relying on Turkish accounts.

Yea the United States hasn't been happy about Russia involvement lately
Hopefully we're not seeing the beginning of World War III.
It continues to shape up nicely.
