Two bodies found but unable to be identified due to extensive burns. Doesn't look too good unfortunately.

Two Australian surfers missing after driving through Mexican drug cartel territory - SFGate

Quote:
The families of two Australian surfers missing in Mexico "hold deep fears" after two bodies were found in a burned van in a region dominated by a prominent drug cartel.

The van — identical to one belonging to Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, the two surfers — was found in Navolato on Nov. 21, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Mexican authorities were unable to identify the bodies immediately because they were too badly burnt.

I know a young man who drives through it once a year, he says to make sure you have enough money to pay the bandidos.

I had a friend who ended up in jail there around 1970 for a week. Don't really know the whole story but rumor had it that it was money that got him out.

I have gone there for work several times but I only fly to and from there. Driving there is not something I would do and I only live 3 hours from the Texas/Mexico border.

I see many wealthy Mexican nationals living in my city (San Antonio) driving fancy cars with Mexico plates. How they manage to drive these cars in Mexico and not get killed just amazes me. I guess it is knowing which roads to take and which roads not to take.

These surfers probably went way off the beaten path and got themselves into trouble.

I have a Mexican friend (now a naturalized citizen) who quit visiting home simply because his job as a mechanical engineer with an aerospace company made him, or his children, a good target for kidnappers.
