The answer isn't discontinuing all displays, conversation, etc that makes us who we are. The answer isn't homogenizing our public schools.

If you think Jews, Muslims, Hundus, etc. were actually just fine and dandy participating in the public school's Nativity Play when you were a kid, you're dead wrong.
How do you know all, or even most, Jews, Muslims, Hindus were not fine and dandy participating?

Obviously we have seen the Christmas Tree and Menorah displayed at the White House. Other posters have mentioned ceremonies for Rhamadan and Dwali....that would be 4....share with me what the White House does on a regular basis to promote or celebrate Buddhism or Hinduism or the dozens/hundreds of other religions that people practice in the US

Your personal feelings are not the arbiter of what's appropriate. The Constitution is - and the Constitution explicitly states that the government should not show favoritism to any one religion. A public school field trip to see Santa is favoring Christianity over non-Christian religions, and is therefore not OK.
Are you the person who self-describes as a school principal ? If so, you should know better than to declare taking a trip to see Santa violates the Constitution. You clearly want it to be a violation of the 1st Amendment, but the fact is, it isn't. You'd be better off with the other invalid arguments against the trip because they're more opinion than fact.

The answer most definitely isn't in imposing the religious practices of majority onto minority.

Santa = Christmas = the birth of Jesus. There's no way around this no matter how hard people try to obsuscate this connection.

For the same reason I know that most observant Christians would find it difficult to let their kids participate in a Muslim play celebrating Mohammed.

when i was in public school we made christmas tree decorations out of wooden spoons that were sold in a nearby department store as a school fundraiser.
we also made paper dradles and played with them in class (i dont think any of us were jewish).

i think as long as it wasnt biblical it was fair game.

Sorry, but Mormons comprise a tiny minority of Colorado's population. Sure there's a higher percentage of Mormons in Colorado than there are in New Hampshire, for instance, but there are hardly enough to make a difference in terms of how people vote.

In the USA, in the year 2015, for most people, Santa Claus isn't a religious figure, no matter how many times you track the history of St. Nicholas to the 3rd or 4th century.

She did say that. she also said the trip to see Santa was the culmination of 5 days' worth of Christmas-themed activities at school.

The better solution would be to bring other non-religious activities when those holidays occur, not to fuss over a short trip to see Santa.
There was no reason the school board couldn't have done that. They didn't. Maybe next year they will take a clue from the alternate activity some of the parents set up (where kids were introduced to the winter holiday celebrations 8 different faith traditions) and arrange that instead.

Yes, it was. Among a wide variety of other things.
