I wonder how many of theses policies are mandated by the school districts attorney and insurance carrier?
They didn't get a 5 day suspension. That was a rumor that the media is reporting as fact. District issued a press release that the punishment is much more significant than that. (But districts can never release details, though the news release implies criminal charges leading to expulsion are being sought.)
You have to do the right thing. When 9/11 happened, the office workers were told to go back to work, that it was OK. Better to get the heck out and risk the job than your life when you know something is wrong. That kid was brave and deserves accolades.
