Mattel is spending a lot of time addressing "social concerns" lately--this, and showing little boys playing with Barbie dolls in their commercials.

This will also pay off for Mattel. The clothes all little girls must have will now not fit all their dolls, so you'll have to buy the curvy version and the origional version and so on. I assume they all fit in the house and the car. Making Barbies different is fine, but don't pretend its being done just so Mattel will look more socially acceptable. Look for spending more money on barbie clothes.

Since they have gone PC, why isn't there a paraplegic Barbie?

Disclaimer: I'm a guy that doesn't play with dolls and, unlike some friends in college, I don't have a Barbie fetish.

All this is is marketing. For God sake, it's a doll not a BMW

It's boils down to something much simpler, it's a new version of a child's toy. Leave it to the adults to find outrage, controversy, and something to bicker about.

They found outrage that Barbie was too perfect.

They found outrage that Barbie is too fat, too tall and has too many skin tones.

Lets not be too dismissive of the pressures brought to bear on companies by people with chips on their shoulders, and the race merchants that intimidate and shake down companies like Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton.
Their respective organizations have made a living on squeaking to get the green grease.
