I honestly think it should be against the law to travel there. a pop-up should appear on anyone's computer when booking travel to Asia...travel to NK by American citizens is strictly prohibited and you're on your own if you're arrested there.
North Korean state media said Warmbier, who reportedly entered North Korea on a tourist visa, is accused of carrying out "a hostile act against the DPRK," referring to the acronym for the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea.
Warmbier entered the country "for the purpose of bringing down the foundation of its single-minded unity at the tacit connivance of the U.S. government," the report said.
Wow! Who knew that a mere college junior had the power to bring down the foundation of an entire country's single-minded unity?
Acts like this weaken the US. just last week the psychotic leader of NK said he wants to make peace. which translates to: we need food and other aid, as soon as we get it, we're going back on our word.
This will now put us in a compromising position. Just like it did with Iran.
The US shouldn't do a thing to help this guy. Sorry pal, you knew what you were getting into.
This is why in the Iranian thread, I stated the US should have never even bothered with the Americans that were held there. All of the Americans arrested and held in Iran went to Iran on their own free will. The US coming in for the rescue just creates a moral hazard in that other people will travel to places like this, and expect the US to get them out when arrested.
It should be put out that if a US citizen voluntarily travels somewhere, the US gov is not going to make an effort if the person is arrested. Same with non-gov entities taking hostages; if a person travels to some known conflict zone in which the US gov officially warns about, and gets taken hostage, the US gov is not going to make an effort for release.
Their families should have to pay whatever it costs the US to get them freed. Or better yet, leave them there.
Un freaking believable!! How STUPID can you be?
Total agreement here.
To be honest, when I hear of "everyday people" traveling to places like North Korea or Iran or Syria, I am totally suspicious of their intent or sanity (and I'm not joking).
