These anti-vaxxers are ridiculous. They probably are exposed to more contaminants regularly just living in a modern home than they are when getting a one-time vaccination that is proven to protect against disease.

You are thinking of the meningococcal vaccine. There are two infant vaccines that can prevent the most likely causes of Ezekiel's pneumonia and meningitis:

Vaccine Information Statement | Pneumococcal Conjugate | VIS | CDC

"Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (called PCV13) protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria.

PCV13 is routinely given to children at 2, 4, 6, and 1215 months of age."

Vaccine Information Statement | Hib | Haemophilus Influenzae Type b |CDC

"Doses of Hib vaccine are usually recommended at these ages:

First Dose: 2 months of age
Second Dose: 4 months of age
Third Dose: 6 months of age (if needed, depending on brand of vaccine)
Final/Booster Dose: 12-15 months of age"

Ezekiel was 19 months old when he died.

This isn't a vaccination issue. The issue that is playing out in the Canadian court has to do with the couple not seeking medical help soon enough. If the boy had bacterial meningitis he could have been treated via antibiotics. Based on the evidence that has come out in he courtroom, they knew that he may have had meningitis due to his body being too stiff to put into his car seat as well as the advice of their nurse friend that he may have it, as well as them mentioning it to the naturopath who also advised them to seek medical care. Based on that, it does appear that they were aware that meningitis was likely and should have acted much sooner in getting him care. There is no way to know if he would have lived or died if that had happened. We'll see what happens as far as their trial goes. I do think they bear some culpability although I don't think that five years in prison is warranted or serves any real purpose.

He probably wouldn't have even contracted meningitis in the first place if he had gotten his vaccinations.

Their failure to get the baby legitimate medical care is just a corollary of the same parental incompetence.

Imprisonment should be reserved for violent criminals IMO, but ideally they'd be judged as unfit parents and disallowed from caring for another child ever again.

There is no way to know that for sure and since that is not what the case is about, your point is irrelevant.

Prison would serve the same purpose it always serves. Justice for the victim and an example to others not to go down the same road. If them serving a prison term dissuades other parents from ignoring medical advise or attempting to "cure" an illness with non proven means, it'd be a win.

What we do know is that the HIB vaccine is 95% effective once the series is complete. Recommendations call for completed vaccinations at 15 months of age. This 18 month old boy should have had a 5% chance of contracting Meningitis. No way to know if he would have contracted the disease even if he had been vaccinated, but statistically speaking, chances are he would not. Additionally, if his parents had sought appropriate treatment on a timely basis, he would have had an 85% chance of recovery.

What the poor kid had instead were lousy parents. And he paid the ultimate price.

'Holistic prescriptions', echinacea for meningitis...those frauds need to do some time too.

It is not like they could use lack of funds for an excuse either not with Alberta Health Care. If they did not have a family doctor there are also walk in clinics and the emergency room. A bottle of real maple syrup would have cost more than a visit to the doctor.

There is no excuse for the child's death other then the ideology of the parents.

Wait, the friend/nurse said she "had no idea, suggested it could be meningitis".
So they took him to a NATUROPATH?!?

" In the interview, she said about two weeks prior, her son had a runny nose, fever and was having trouble breathing. She said she looked up his symptoms online and thought it might be croup (a respiratory infection). She then began giving him as much natural product as possible. She said he started to improve for a few days, but then became weak and lethargic again."

Collet said she called a registered nurse to come check his condition, who suggested it may be meningitis.

Collet said she and David visited a naturopathic doctor in Lethbridge who gave them a treatment for viral meningitis, but never actually examined Ezekiel.

so, they knew it could be meningitis ~ and took that course of action.

That's negligence.

And this isn't a dig at naturopaths. Good ones, know their role, and when standard medical care is urgently required.
