Pakistani woman killed after turning down marriage proposal - CNN.com

This is so depressing - the constant stories about violence against women in Pakistan and other Middle Eastern countries. There is nothing we can actually do to help these women and it seems like a never-ending cycle of hatred, fear and control over women. I always wonder what the decent men in these countries feel about this. Don't they love their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters? All of these beautiful women tortured and murdered regularly and nothing seems to change.

Honor killings, where families kill their daughters for resisting or disobeying cultural and religious family expectations, are also on the rise in Middle Eastern, Arabic and Asian immigrant communities in Europe. They are trying to crack down on this, but too many families still get away with it.

I hate to break it to you but women right here in the good ol' US of A are also being killed for not handing out their phone numbers or rejecting a guy. It's not just the Middle East- such violence against women happens here as well.

There are a lot of reasons people kill each other here. "Not handing out their phone numbers" or "rejecting a guy" are just two. And newsflash: Women here also kill men for the same stupid reasons.

None of which have a thing to do with culture-sanctioned honor killings, and you know it.

Yeah but here they go to jail. There? They consider it a right to do as they do and are practically celebrated when they protect the "honor" of the family name.

Apparently my alzheimer's brain doesn't get the 'honor' portion of this murder and possibly because the story is incomplete. The 'family' was away at a funeral ... four thugs burn her ... the family gets notified about 'a fire'. Just whose 'honor' were the thugs protecting here ... the rejected suitor? Looks like the beginning of a 'blood feud.

They don't even have to resist or disobey, just be the target of a rumor! Saw something years ago on TV that said majority of these young women, after being murdered because someone questioned their virtue, are found to be virgins. All sorts of stupid going on in those communities.
