And it's still disgusting. I have also read that the money taken in by the authorities from trophy hunting often does not go where it is needed the most, to the poor people of the region. Instead it goes in the pockets of government officials.

A better question would be; if they do need to control the population, is it because of overpopulation, or is it because of human encroachment into their habitat putting humans (and maybe livestock) at risk.
I still find it odd that they raise money for species conservation by killing the very animals they say they're trying to preserve. I understand the argument, but it still seems a bit of a contradiction to me.

Habitat loss and human encroachment are primary reasons. Africans want Africa for people and livestock, not for Lions

Question: In the absence of trophy hunting, how much value does a lion have in Africa?
Answer: None. They are killed as vermin everywhere where controlled trophy hunting doesn't exist.
