I don't get the scholarship donation part? While that's way in the future, I'd be a little irked if I was a large donor to this university. I mean giving away scholarships because of a viral video?
Yup, that was exceptionally generous. I think the Kohl's gift certificate and free Disney vacation were enough.
She deserves the money because, through her efforts, she was able convince others to give her the money. Anytime you convince someone to give you money, you deserve it (unless you committed fraud in the process -- which this lady hasn't given the details we have).
Interesting that people are saying she "deserves" this money. Why? Because she's funny and made people laugh and seems to be a happy person? In that case, I know dozens of people who also "deserve" money.
Look, the video made me laugh, too, and I like her attitude but I don't think she "deserves" money for it. She's gotten it, so be it, it doesn't bother me, but I don't think she "deserves" it.
The video got tens of millions of views, and many of those views were tied to advertisements (such as the ads that appear before Youtube videos). Additionally, many of the gifts and money that she has received has been its own form of advertising - such as the college that no one outside of Texas has ever heard of giving scholarships or Kohl's highlighting her in a big way on social media.
There are teenagers who make 6 figures from Youtube channels where they just demonstrate makeup. Each video will get millions of hits so they get advertising revenue as well as free products to demo and even money to demo specific product lines. There are whole PR firms that JUST work with bloggers, video creators, and other internet "celebrities" to connect brands with paid content that seems "authentic" even if the internet creator is getting big bucks to sell.
If your friends are funny, make people laugh, and seem to be a happy person, they deserve money too if their videos get tens of millions of views.
Im so glad she is reaping some rewards...she didn't ask for it, but I am happy to see someone besides a trashy reality TV fame hog getting something good. The lady is refreshing.
Only $20,000 in gifts, which only cost the companies probably about $10,000. So not really so much.
The $400,000 in tuition to some obscure religious school in FL is way in the future, and that is only if the kids choose to go there, and there are probably time and qualification and other restrictions.
I think news sources intentionally greatly exaggerate how much people make from youtube videos because big numbers get the attention of people.
And, she did not earn it. If she had contracted with these companies in advance to produce this video in exchange for a predetermined fee structure she would have earned it, these were laregly charity, though it does help disney and kohls to reward people that give them free advertsing.
