Hell yeah! You have every right to kill yourself faster if you want too!

It's not a money grab. It is earmarked for universal pre-K, a top priority of the new mayor's campaign. He won handily, taking 85% of the vote. It seems non-Philadelphians aren't interested in reading beyond the headline.

To many of us Philadelphians, having universal kindergarten and upgrades to our extensive rec centers, most of which need it, is hardly a joke and is about the health of our community. Although from where you sit it doesn't look that way.

And as drink sales slow watch for bonds to be demanded. Heck, even if drink sales stay at current levels you watch and see the demands start for more $$$ to support the new programs that never, ever have enough funding.

Thankfully I'll never set foot in Philly ever again so I'll not pay a cent.

Most soda doesn't have any sugar in it. It has high fructose corn syrup.

So, I think in order for it to be fair, they should put a surtax on all diet foods and drinks. If someone feels virtuous drinking diet soda, then they will feel just as virtuous choosing to drink water or unsweetened tea or coffee. So tax them all. Otherwise, this is just ridiculous.

That's a bit hostile of an attititude, isn't it? Do you harbor a special resentment towards people who count calories or try to live a little healthier than when they were kids?

The tax is a tax on soda. Period. Don't know why the need for a tirade on people who try to count calories, since that has nothing to do wit the tax on soda.

Yes, and red meat, eggs, non-organic chicken, margarine, butter, corn syrup (no more pecan pie), pie and cake while we are at it, canola oil, farm raised salmon, and what else is currently declared to be "not good for you to eat"? Oh yes, don't forget coffee.

It's not the government's job to tell me what I can and can not eat. The "things that are bad for you" list changes every year and what was bad this year might be good next year.

Didn't the American revolution start over a tax on tea?

They aren't telling what you can or cannot eat, just what you are going to pay for it if you choose to.

Gasoline taxes are significantly higher. Is the government telling you how much you should drive?

Goodness - all this reaction! I guess folks love them some Coca-Cola.

Coming from someone who really doesn't drink that much soda I agree. Now for years I have known people who for one reason or another did gave up soda OK good for them. Now what does get me about those who scream and brag about giving up the pop is that so many of them do other things that aren't exactly healthy either. Nothing like having someone blowing cigar smoke in my face and guzzling down those Red Bull energy drinks or 5 Hour energy shots as if they were water while at the same time yell at me because that Diet Coke in my hand is so unhealthy. Then there was that guy from Denver on Facebook last year who ripped me a new one because he had seen a pic online of my office and on the desk was a Dr. Pepper. Telling me that such stuff is poison and that he didn't want to pay for my health insurance. OK he has the right to say that but this is the very same guy on Facebook who would brag about how every weekend he would hit the bars to get drunk ( lots of selfies of him being smashed on Facebook ) oh if he isn't hitting the bars he would brag about attending "naked hot tub parties" where he would smoke a lot of pot and have unprotected sex with other men even though he is HIV+. When I told him that I shouldn't have to pay for his and his sex partner's HIV and his alcoholism..well lets just say we are no longer friends on Facebook.
