It says they're taxing diet soda too. The major complaint I've heard about diet soda is that people think they're being good drinking it, so they think they can get away with eating more junk food.

So, I think in order for it to be fair, they should put a surtax on all diet foods and drinks. If someone feels virtuous drinking diet soda, then they will feel just as virtuous choosing to drink water or unsweetened tea or coffee. So tax them all. Otherwise, this is just ridiculous.

A money grab by any other name is still a money grab.

Some of the money raised by the tax will go to pay for city employee benefits and pet projects of council members and to build up municipal budget reserves..
Here is the part that screams bull feces. If the funds are not going towards health care in some way, then they are certainly doing it for the wrong reason. I expected little Debbie to be next, but no; next is a pizza party, and what do you think they're gonna drink with it?

In England they had at one time a Sunlight tax so people boarded up their windows.

That's not far down the road.

As has been said already. This is just for the money, they may say it is over a concern for the health of the citizens, but it is not.

If it was the funds would be mostly going to public health and obesity prevention. This is just a blatant cash grab, taxing something that they think they can get away with.

Looks like Philly doesn't have any or enough red light cameras to take more money out of their residents pockets. This is just another money grab. Their claim is that a 12 oz. flavored liquid that has 150 calories and 41g sugar causes obesity. The new tax is 1.5 cents PER OUNCE. That's 18 cents on one 12 oz. can. Which adds $2.16 to a 12 pack. Another Government rip off. Keep voting for those Democrats. They never saw a tax they didn't like.

Time to go back to the old ways and quit buying the commercial crud! Make it yourself! Root Beer, Ginger Ale etc. tastes wayyyyy better than the store bought junk anyways.
I wonder if Soda Stream is included in the tax? If so, make your own syrup and you're still home freeee!

I would fight that with every breath I have. It's damn hard enough to find healthy low-calorie foods at reasonable prices. Most low-calorie versions of brands often cost more, and it's not right. I have been drinking Diet Coke for years, and I'll be damned if I will pay more for it than the non-diet version.
