Elephant Shot in the Head Walks Up to Truck to Ask For Help
Inside Edition,Inside Edition 3 hours ago Comments Like Reblog on Tumblr Share Tweet Email

An elephant shot in the forehead wandered around a Zimbabwe park for weeks with a massive hole before help could arrive. When it did, he motioned for assistance.

The elephant, named Pretty Boy, was shot in the forehead, which experts described as "too high for a 'kill shot.'"

When helped arrived inside Mana Pools National Park, Pretty Boy walked right up to veterinarians Dr. Keith Dutlow and Dr. Lisa Marabini for aide, according to AWARE’s Facebook page.

The two vets from AWARE (Animal and Wildlife Area Research and Rehabilitation Trust), examined the elephant on June 13.

They tranquilized Pretty Boy so they could take X-ray’s and get a better understanding of what was going on in his head.

The vets discovered that the bullet was lodged just 5 centimeters from the open wound in his forehead.

They wrote on Facebook: “The X-ray, which in our opinion, confirms the presence of a 'mushroomed' bullet that has glanced off the skull and lodged under the skin - which has caused a fracture of the sinus turbinate bones at the level of the entry wound. The opacity in the sinuses adjacent to the entry wound is suggestive of pus in that area.”

Dr. Marabini told Sky News: “He was lucky. The bullet must have glanced off the surface of his skull. After the first shot he must have turned to flee. The perpetrator fired another shot at his heart, because he had another abscess in his shoulder."

Once Pretty Boy woke up from the tranquilizer drugs; he slept with his head pressed against a tree for a half hour.

The elephant is recovering inside the park and the vets will return for routine checkups.

They should find the poachers and feed them to the Lions.

Animal "head pressing" against a wall or something typically indicates damage to the nervous system. If a cat or dog does it, they need to be taken to a vet right away. I would imagine the same thing for any animal that does that.

Obviously it has more wrong with it still. Hopefully it'll recover completely from the wounds.

In total Argreement - Britain has a training area in Kenya and both British and US Forces are actively helping to both stop the poachers and to train local Rangers and Police.

I agree. I think since China is driving so much of the demand for ivory, it would be fair to ask the Chinese to send their military forces to various African countries with decimated elephant pop to help eradicate the problem with poachers. The Africans are too incompetent to deal with the poachers who often have heavier weapons than the African militaries. Here is where China can do some good for once and maybe also use this opportunity to give their military some real combat training. Everyone, including the elephants, win but the poachers.

I think Training the Local Rangers is the best way forward, whilst elephants and wildlife are usually far safer in the areas used by British Forces in Kenya. Between 10-12,000 British Soldiers train in Kenya every year.

Except that when the British military is there, it's training. If the Chinese PLA is there, it would be reported as a hostile Chinese imperialistic invasion by the BBC.

Kenya has a Defence Agreement with Britain and we have historic close links with the country, our other major training base outside of Europe in terms of size is in Canada another country with close historic links.

All the Chinese need do is stop the market in Ivory in China, that would significantly effect the poachers trade.

I am also not sure the Kenyans themselves whose country it is would want Chinese involvement, although some form of UN Force might be welcomed, although the UN already offers support and funding in relation to the establishment of Anti Poaching Units, Armed Wildlife Rangers and other such units, many of whom request British help in terms of better training and support.
