Which probably explain why the others there did nothing.
If you read the article you will find that others did step in to rescue the turtle. It was a small group of people doing this.

Notice where this happened. The same people that would venture into a restaurant and start shooting or knifing people would beat a turtle.

I'm amused by the people who think that deviant animal abusers represent humans in general.
We humans are the only species capable of genuine compassion.
A lot of us love animals, even if we do eat them.

Humans are the only species capable of compassion ?

Uh, I don't THINK so. In fact, I don't know if we're capable of that at ALL at least not anymore.

When I lost my son 90% of the people in my life disappeared. Suddenly, as if I was a leper.
Every animal I met, on the other hand saw through to the pain underneath the fake smiles and the "I'm doing fine" obvious lie and became basically my only comfort.

This is one of the reasons I get so pissed off at the "it's only an animal" crowd when they try to minimize the importance and love we have for our COMPASSIONATE and loyal companion animals. Without my dog I don't think I could have made it through losing my son.

I'll second that. My cats were stuck to me like Velcro for weeks after my wife passed away. Can't imagine what I would have been like without them.

The types of people capable of this behaviour are everywhere, not just Lebanon. They lack compassion, and they lack respect for life. Not the kind of people you'd want to put your kids in a lifeboat with. I sometimes wonder how much of the population they represent. 30%? Maybe smaller? Then add in the types that blindly follow without thinking or feeling. The longer I live, I swear, the more shocked I am that there is still a human race.

I honestly believe that they represent less than 2% of the population. No one that I closely associate with would do something like that, and I associate with quite a diversity of people (and a large number of them). Anyone who is capable of that is way off as far as their moral compass is concerned, and they are more than likely capable of beating and torturing a human as well. While I share the outrage for what happened to this turtle (any sane, rational person would), I don't share the sentiment that humans in general should be devalued for all of the good that they (we) do because of incidents such as this one. There are lots of good people out there, and the actions of the human waste like the ones in the article should not speak for the good people among us.
