Hey better than the old days when they threw your azz in a volcano to test your courage

Nope, it's the cell phone "stupidity" that did them in.

If you read some of the reports, the reason that people got burned were that there were folks in front of them that just had to stop to take "selfies" as they were going over the white-hot goals. Brilliant. Got to get that Facebook shot, right? So freakin' stupid, but so very typical today.

The ones that got burned apparently stopped on the white-hot coals to take "selfies', you know, to post to their Facebook pages and all that.

Exactly.

This isn't a new thing.

Brisk heel to toe, smooth and steady.

It's a parlor trick. Well, hopefully outside of the parlor, but if you try it inside the parlor, you get what's comin to ya.

Not all of the "selfie" people were burned. The worst victims were the ones behind them who wanted to run faster but were held up by the posing narcissists.

What else is new?

Look, this is physics. Mere thoughts will not prevent the extreme kinetic energy present on hot coals from transferring to bare feet that come into contact with said coals, thereby inflicting burns upon those feet. What's next, dowsing for water? Sacrificing a chicken?

What doesn't surprise me one bit is that there is an endless supply of fools willing to pay good money to charlatans like Tony Robbins in order to be fooled.
I agree. While I am all for the "Positive thinking" and persevering to reach goals, the hot coals thing is a parlor trick like another poster said. No life goals really require walking on hot coals. I knew a guy into Tony Robbins years ago. He was obsessed. It reminds me of Benny Hinn where thousands flock to seminars to be knocked down by psychic blasts of "divine energy " to bless them. There's a sucker born every minute, and the right words and charisma can have some fall at another's feet.

Read somewhere else that one of the people handling the firewalk admitted that new coals had recently been added and the tops did not have enough time to cool......one of the gimmicks to this is what people are walking on is not the red hot glowing parts.....those are underneath to create to glow but the top section being walked on normally has a large cross section of already blackened or dark grey coals that have been jostled and allowed to cool to the point, while there is still a lot of heat involved, they won't burn you if you walk at a brisk pace. Also, red hot coals are along the sides to help the effect but the main walking path through them is at a dead center prepared with not as dangerous charred coal/ash which is why they say to walk in a straight line quickly through center path.....mostly walking on blackened/already charred coals with majority of heat coming from beneath them.

Some info:

http://entertainment.howstuffworks.c...rewalking1.htm

here are a couple of things to notice about any firewalking event:

-Firewalkers are not actually firewalkers. They are really coalwalkers. The fire is lit well ahead of time to allow the wood to burn down to non-flaming coals.

-The event is always held at night. If it were done during daylight, the bed of coals would look instead like a bed of ashes. There is always a layer of ash covering the coals. By doing it at night, the glowing red light is still visible through this layer of ash. Photo courtesy The Florida Pagan Gathering The hot coals are covered with a layer of ash.

-The firewalker never dawdles. Now, no self-respecting firewalker would run across the coals -- that would be undignified. But firewalkers certainly are walking briskly. You never see firewalkers standing on the coals.

-If you were to pick up one of these pure-carbon coals, you would notice that it is extremely light. Carbon is a lightweight element -- that's why carbon-fiber bike frames and tennis rackets don't weigh very much. A coal is mostly lightweight carbon atoms and air spaces (it does contain a few other elements, like potassium and calcium -- that's what left behind in the ash).

-This lightweight carbon structure is a poor conductor of heat. It takes a relatively long time for heat to transfer from the glowing coal to your skin. If the coal were made of red-hot metal, heat transfer through conduction would be almost instantaneous -- you would get a severe burn.

I don't care how they doctor up that fire pit to make it "safe". I have nothing to prove to myself or anyone else by walking barefoot across it. It's madness.
