There's no reason, in this age of electronic technology, that the Olympics games have to take place all in one location. As long as the games are all in the same time zone and countries give their athletes the ability to attend the opening and closing ceremonies, what difference does it make if events for different sports are held fifty miles apart or 1,500 miles apart? It's not as if the volleyball players care what the gymnasts or the tennis players are doing. Play the games where it is safe to play them and there is adequate housing for the athletes. I thought the whole point of the games was nations cooperating.

This makes perfect sense and in an ideal world might be a reality, you could choose present state of the art venues for each sport without constructing new venues, you could use college or high school facilities and roll over the unspent construction funds for scholarships new education programs, etc.

But IMO the games have become more spectacle than spirit. Countries and cities compete to win the games hoping for construction jobs, boosted economy, ongoing residual post Olympic fame including increased tourism, facilities use, etc. all with corresponding economical gain. Broadcast stations bid and compete to gain exclusive coverage rights, clothing and merchandise is trademarked and branded, etc...

It would be more difficult to create an atmosphere of glory and spectacle with split venues using existing facilities.

The ironic part of all this is that Rio bid to host the 1936 summer games but lost out to Berlin. I won't go into detail over how that choice played out to be controversial, but I dare say that in hindsight Rio may have been the better choice.

I think it should just be held in countries with existing infrastructure on a rotating basis. Many of the venues end up going abandoned long after the games are over.
