RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Parts of a mutilated body washed up on the sands of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, police said, just meters (yards) from where beach volleyball athletes will compete in the upcoming Olympics.

The discovery, first reported to a newspaper by a Rio street vendor, is the latest to unnerve the city as it grapples with rising crime, a recession and exhausted state finances at a time when it hoped to be celebrating the first Olympics ever held in South America.

It was unclear Wednesday afternoon what conditions may have led to the mutilated body but a policeman standing guard by a security perimeter confirmed its existence to Reuters.
Police officials did not immediately return calls to their public affairs office for more details Wednesday afternoon.

The Olympics, which start August 5, were intended to show off an economic boom that has since fizzled in Latin America’s biggest country. Now the games come as the state of Rio de Janeiro awaits emergency funding of 2.9 billion reais ($892 million) to ensure financing for public services.

Parts of a mutilated body have washed up on a beach in Rio de Janeiro where beach volleyball teams will be competing within weeks at the Olympics.

Police said a foot and other parts had been found on the famous sands of Copacabana beach on Wednesday, being cordoned off by officers and covered in black tarpaulin next metres from a new stadium for August's events.

The gruesome discovery came after more than a week of deadly gun battles in the city’s slums amid attempts to capture a Brazilian drug trafficker who escaped a hospital recommended to tourists.

It is utterly amazing that the IOC actually awarded the games to Brazil.

That was back in 2009. Here we are 7 years later and they are not even close to being capable of hosting the Olympics.

This is going to be a complete mess. I would not be disappointed if many American athletes decided to not compete due to safety (gang violence) and health safety (Zika virus) reasons

What a massive cluster****. Off field events might be more entertaining and interesting than the actual competitions.

It's too bad for the athletes. They work hard for years and then the venue can't get their act together.

Ideally they would just choose a centralized location for the Olympics or maybe 3 or 4 rotating locations, one group for summer, one group for winter. Facilities could be built or renovated and then could be maintained for the Olympics and other international competitions. You know that those sites would be good to go and you'd consistently be offering world class amenities to world class athletes.

Awarding it to countries that are clearly in over their heads in trying to competently handle the logistics is of no real benefit to anyone.
