They played half the price because the original price tag was ridiculous. It may be LA, but things aren't that expensive. If you look at other celebrity houses in the area, they are only worth about 2-7 million. The price of the playboy mansion was inflated because of the Playboy name and reputation. No one is buying that house because of the land, they're buying for the house. Which will be used as a private residence once Hugh is gone.

My grand parents lived in a 1950s ranch style house (1/4 acre lot, 2000 sq/ft) in SoCal with no view and it sold for 1 million when they died 15 years ago.
The land might be worth that. I wouldn't be surprised. They paid half of what he was asking for which sounds to me like a tear down. And bought by the neighbors maybe wanting to expand their property.
But who knows, maybe they will turn it into a museum or a hotel?
I believe they brought Hef's exwife's house which was at one time also Playboy property. They plan to rejoin the properties as a private residence again when Hef dies.

Not sure I would want to live at such a well known place. I would think the TMZ tour bus and other tourist gawkers would be a daily occurrence. Even the house from the Goonies has to deal with trespassers, I cannot even imagine the type of security need to keep people off your property at the Playboy mansion. Seems like drunk frat boys would be a constant middle of the night problem.
