City police said officers recovering a stolen vehicle about 9:30 a.m. in the area of 22nd and Prairie recognized Cody Tryon, 28, of Terre Haute, and arrested him on an outstanding warrant for robbery.
They handcuffed Tryon behind his back and put him in the rear of a patrol car.
While the officers were securing the stolen vehicle, Tryon kicked out the metal screen that separates the inside front of the patrol car from the back, slid through the opening and drove away, police said.
Using GPS, police tracked the car to an address on Melton Ave in Terre Haute.
