The $60M Allen stadium encounters some problems since opening in 2012. In 02/27/2014 the new stadium was shut down because of significant structural defects. 05/19/2014, stadium deemed not safe, closed for season.
Fifteen months after the shut down and at a repair cost exceeding $10M with the contractor and architectural firms paying for the work, opened again with graduation ceremonies.
yes we have a serious problem with priorities in this country, johnny cant read or write but he sure can trow a football!!!!!!!!!!
And the worst part is that yes he can throw a football, but not good enough to get him a full ride scholarship and definitely not good enough to go pro, so he ends up selling shoes at a mall like Al Bundy reliving his high school football days.
This is a difficult discussion because it's a much more complex issue than it would appear.
Football is important and cultural in that part of the country. While I personally don't share their feelings one would have to be naïve to it's reality.
If this is what attracts people to a suburb and they value that and it generates additional tax and other revenue and so forth then that's REAL and can't just be dismissed because we don't agree with the value of football in and of itself.
Ultimately it boils down to whatever the residents of that town want to do as it didn't cost many of us a single cent. If they feel it will pay off over-time and help anchor property values and be a community prestige item then so be it....that's their decision.
I think athletics should be outsourced to park districts or municipalities (or to counties, in highly rural areas), rather have it be a part of the respective high school. Because schools are about learning, while parks are about fitness and recreation, the very things sports are meant for. Otherwise, schools can---and many do---turn into sport stadiums with classrooms in the back. Along with a cafeteria serving Obama-sanctioned flavorless lunches in tiny portions, while a corporate-sponsored vending machine selling "healthy" snacks looms just outside the lunchroom.
I assume everyone on this thread lives a totally frill-free life then.
My frills stop at $35 million.
