They took amounts that were paid after person allegedly "died".
Families of elderly people who die have been known to cover up the deaths. If the person is not reported dead, the monthly checks keep coming.

"A woman received six months in prison Monday for collecting her late grandmother's Social Security benefits for more than a decade, according to federal prosecutors.
Yvette A. Disnew, 48, of Newport News pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in May to stealing more than $152,000 from the government.
According to court documents, Disnew's 87-year-old grandmother, Carrie Lee Mason, died April 12, 1999. Disnew never informed the Social Security Administration."
