I was trying to keep my replacement Note 7 until Note 8 comes out but since I was forced to download the update - it's almost unuseable. Warning messages keep popping up, battery life stinks.. Samsung is sending Stericycle to my house to pick up Note 7, give me an S7 Edge, $100 for my trouble, $100 for downgraded phone and $50 for accessories I bought.

I got that same update. I finally traded in the Note 7 for a Galaxy S7 Edge.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out for Samsung. I heard an interesting piece on this the other day on NPR as it pertains to South Korea. The Samsung family of companies are extremely important to their economy (make up something like a whopping 20% of their GDP) and even national identity.
And phones aren't their only product.
I doubt it affected their brand much at the end of the day. I just upgraded to the S7 (my 3rd Samsung phone), and asked the sales guy which sells more, Samsungs or iPhones. He said Samsungs hands down, often after coming in to get an iPhone. This wasn't the Apple store, but it does show that lots of folks that go in to choose end up choosing Samsungs.

I am just using a portable battery when needed. Trying to hold out for the S8 in a few months, or if they introduce the same option they did in South Korea, where you get to trade it in for the S7 for now, and later get the S8 upgrade for free.
