Get CPS on the case----its a clear case of not predicting the future and making damned sure nothing ever, ever goes wrong!
Of course, staffed by under 25, childless, holder's of a worthless bachelor's degree following flow-chart directions
ie if accident, why? Someone was at fault, must be the parents. If the parents are young, uneducated, below the poverty line, can't afford a lawyer, then....go after them. Must maintain the dept's statistics
The above, for those who don't realize, is pure saracasm. I was so sickened I couldn't even read the whole story. I pray the mother can find the strength to go on.
When I was little, my mother used to keep me away from elevators, now I understand why

I said its pure sarcasm. We've tangled with CPS for years, any little thing was investigated. I remember a case where 2 children died in a car accident. CPS tried to blame the parents for not having their seat belts fastened correctly. Imagine the horror of losing both your children, then, being blamed for it by a government agency who's sole purpose is to destroy families, to show how much valued work they're doing!
Ever since that one show about lawyers (can't remember the name) killed off one of their main characters by having her step into an empty elevator shaft - I am totally paranoid about making sure the elevator is actually THERE before I step in.
WOW, me too! I never saw that show, but I have always been a little paranoid of elevators. It's a very sad story about the baby and her mother! The building should have had the elevator shut off if they were working on it, with an out of order sign!!!!
I'm going to get flamed for this comment, but it deserves to be said anyway. This is a very tragic thing that happened to this poor lady. I just don't understand what mom doesn't look at her surroundings when walking with her baby? At least they should. One could argue that the stroller blocked her vision, but it should not impair it so much to prevent them from seeing an enormous gaping hole directly in front of them. I find it quite odd that some posters blamed the fifth grader for not looking before she impaled herself on her cafeteria seat at lunch on this thread yesterday, but aren't considering that this woman should have looked before entering the elevator shaft. I wonder if she was staring at a smartphone. I have seen it time and time again; parents failing to pay close attention to their child's safety because they were preoccupied with their phones.

I'm pretty sure you could have made the same mistake.
The elevator "dings", the door opens, most people wouldn't think twice. They would just walk in.
Just not lest ye be judged.
