Our solar system may have a brand new dwarf planet, orbiting in the region beyond Pluto in the Kuiper Belt.

Called 2014 UZ224, the object is said to be around 330 miles (530km) across and has been spotted around 8.5 billion miles (13.7 billion km) from the Sun.

If confirmed as a dwarf planet, it will join the most famous dwarf planet in our system, Pluto, as well as Eris, Haumea, Ceres and the more recently discovered Makemake. 2014 UZ224 is the third most distant object in our system, behind Eris, and V774104, discovered in October.

We're going to find all sorts of cool things out in the Kuiper Belt, now that we have he ability to detect them.

I am super nerdy when it comes to inter planetary science. I enjoy that Sci-fi so much, I robot, Mars movies, etc... I love that we can still discover things so close to us in a time when it feels like everything close has been discovered. Of course I mean in comparison with other galaxies and solar systems.

I am astonished that our sun's gravitational pull extends so far out into space.

No surprised, it's not big enough to be worth following. There are perhaps thousands or millions of objects in the kuiper belt that can be as large as the moon or greater formed over time from collisions. It's a huge area of floating spaghetti and meatball.

What I am waiting for is the true 9th planet beyond Pluto.

There are probably hundred things beyond Pluto. Maybe thousands. Just because we lack the technology to see them doesn't mean they aren't there. I can't even fathom 8.5 billion miles from the sun. Thrilling.
