Part of the problem in Kuwait is that domestic employees aren't allowed to quit and find other employment without their original employer's consent.
Which may have something to do with why she attempted suicide. Imagine spending every day with the kind of boss who would laugh and make a movie of it as you try to kill yourself.
And it's worth noting that the sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf were the last society that officially sanctioned slavery; according to the late Alan Moorhead (The White Nile) slaves were smuggled out of East Africa until around 1880.
It's a pity that the industrialized nations (with some help from Israel, maybe ), can't move in, seize the oil, and put the worst of the Islamists on reservations.

These are the people that duped us into going to war in Iraq for them under the first Bush. Her actions are not isolated but pretty typical of this hyper-rich, extremely classist and racist culture.
Their passports are held & it is basically slavery. I knew just from reading the headline, that it had happened in one of a handful or Arab countries :-(.
Sickening, nowadays everyone wants to film and put everything on social media. If something happens to someone and I am there, I will call for help and not even think about filming, taking pictures for social media.
This coming from a millennial.
This also shows that people are treated like crap in many Gulf Arab countries.
