You misquoted the OP who stated "everyone should be treated humanely."
The problem is that they are not. People in the USA are treated worse than cattle in our jails and prisons, facilities which are a disgrace of the "civilized" world. It's no wonder there have been successful multimillion-dollar judgments against jails, prisons, and the so-called healthcare companies that service them.
Even the most expensive jails in California and every one we have studied throughout the U.S., paid or unpaid, are extremely inhumane.
At the very least every prisoner (especially the disabled, who are not even eligible for pay-to-stay jails and prisons, if ) should have access in their cells to a telephone at all times so they can report a bad guard, get medical care or report the lack of medical care, and should have a decent mattress and pillow, clean water and clean toilets and food that is edible and the time to eat it. It should be either seasoned (or should have seasoning accompanying it in packets that do not have to be purchased )with which to make the slop palatable, and they should have the ability to take notes—whether written or by audio—in order to document their facilities and treatment. I think ALL prisoners should be given a clean, decent place to sleep.
Take a look at successful jails and prisons in countries such as Switzerland and many others, and you will see how it is possible to to treat people very humanely in accommodations far nicer than our so-called fancy pay jails in the USA and you will also learn that other countries have far, far fewer people who return to jail and much more success.
Treat people like subhumans and they will learn to meet your expectations of them and you may drive them insane or when they get out they may be very dangerous, just the opposite of how former criminals behave in more humane facilities.
The USA is truly an INCARCERATION NATION and we pay so much for this failing system that we cannot provide people with outstanding and less expensive education. Our children lose out while THE SYSTEM of jails and prisons make money for keeping bodies inside. Take the time to learn about this and help to change the system.

For the moment, until our system is improved, if anyone wants to pay an upgrade to get a pillow, at the very least allow them to do that.
I don't think that club Feds actually exist anymore. Is Cosby gets convicted he goes to federal pound in arse prison. Now maybe because his celebrity status he get solitary or his own cell.
I also agree hat the prison cell quality shouldn't be a function of your wealth.

And yet a person who is arrested with a large amount of cash on their person is physically prevented from using their own cash to post bail since they are disallowed from keeping it on their person when being delivered to the holding cell. Why should it be possible for the rich to buy a more luxurious prison life and yet impossible for the middle-class to pay bail that they can actually afford? Something is seriously wrong here.

Wow, you're really out there. You should spend some time in a Central American prison if you think US prisons are bad. Perhaps sample a prison in Southeast Asia while you're at it. Maybe even try a nice seasoned South American one...
I like what that dude in Maricopa was doing. No way would I want to revisit one of his jails. Oddly enough, his facilities were still far superior to many other prison/jail facilities around the world.

Everyone in prison is treated humanely. The lawyers and the ACLU make sure of that. The more upscale inmates pay for different accommodation with their own money, which will lessen the tax burden for tax payers. The money they spend stimulates local economy. This is really a win-win for everyone.
It's a double/triple/quadruple lose-lose for poorer people who are more likely to live under scrutiny and be convicted of relatively minor crimes, can less afford good representation (right, the overworked public defenders available), end up getting disproportionately longer sentences, and now will get worse living conditions than those with more money. Americans really hate the poor and turn a blind eye or give a slap on the wrist to richer folks breaking the same laws or engaging in white collar crime.

Somebody on Quora.com posted her experience in prison... she got locked up for driving with an expired license (or something related). She had an illness, begged to be seen by a hospital, but it fell on deaf ears. I definitely know that inmates have made false claims to try to make a break for it, and other motives, so I can sympathize with some guards. However, it was so painful for her that she was crying and sobbing in pain the whole time. Some consoling from her fellow inmates. Long story short, she managed to get sent to a hospital where they said if she arrived any later, she'd be dead. She understands that prisoners aren't the cream of the crop of society, but I have to agree with her... they're still people.

That's not how the system works. It's more like health insurance. Once you're in the system, they've made their money, and it's cheaper and less work for them to ignore you (like with health insurance, it's cheaper for them to deny your claims)

reneeh63 covered what I was going to say. I'll add that anytime we compare ourselves to some pissant 3rd world country, we're effectively lowering the bar. Saying things like "at least you don't live in North Korea", "at least you're not an actual slave", or "at least you didn't get stuck in human trafficking business" are indeed worse situations, but given how great this country is, why the hell do we ever want to strive towards them as examples?
