Is this really happening that much more often than it used to or is there more 24-7 news coverage than there used to be and that's why it seems like it's happening so often?
Either way, it's still a tragic and preventable situation.
Yes, it's happening more often. Some people act like before the Internet you only got news that happened in your area. Simply not true.
I think it's happening more often because too many today are preoccupied and don't focus on the task at hand.
Also I was talking to a relative who is younger and been teaching elementary school for only a few years. She said she has found many parents she has met who seem to be disengaged from their children to the point of being disturbing.

I do agree with you that people are way too distracted and disengaged.
Many years ago, it was rare because cars windows were rolled down since the cars did not have air-conditioning, and children could sit up front.
Well that would have to have been several decades ago. Because even when I was a kid growing up in the 70s cars had A/C and power windows.
And really what does having A/C have to do with it? If a car was left running with the A/C on, the child or children this has happened to, they would be alive.
When the engine goes off, the A/C goes off.
People have gottend dumbed down and are just too distracted these days.

We're more interconnected than we used to be. Maybe that's it.

It is an issue.
People check their windows if they're rolled down and with air-conditioning, they do not, when they park their car. The latter results in no visual inspection of the back seat.
Where I live, a Mom left her van running with air conditioning on, with child inside. Child was cool but he died later, because the mom wanted a sandwich more than keeping son safe. Someone stole her vehicle and injured the child. I think leaving children in running cars with the AC on is rare, though.

They're not driving a Greyhound bus with 40 rows of seats. How much effort(really none) to see what is in the back seat?
And again, cars in the 70s had air conditioning, and the 80s, and the 90s, so why the upsweep in this happeneing? Dumb downed, self absorbed people, who can't focus on the tasks at hands. And not being able to put the phone down doesn't help.
If you haven't, really set out to make a study of who is paying attention to anyone or anything without a screen. I am talking outdoors, while shopping, at work, poolside, at the park, riding in the car, at parties, anywhere.''Small screen hypnosis'' has rendered peoples' brains to float along in a state of unawareness. It's frickin' sad and it makes for a nation of self-absorbed zombies.

This professor tries to explain why these hot car deaths continues to happen.
After years of extensive research, Diamond concluded that this syndrome results from a competition between the brain's "habit memory system" and "prospective memory system." He explained that the habit memory deals with routine tasks that are performed automatically and that prospective memory deals with both planning and executing a future task... https://www.popsugar.com/moms/Forgot...ontent=link_23
