Mom with newborn who died at 18 days old: 'Don't let anyone kiss your baby'

An Iowa mother is warning other parents about a serious, life-threatening virus that killed her baby girl.
A week after Nicole Sifrit gave birth to Mariana, she and husband Shane noticed she stopped eating and didn't respond when they tried to wake her

July 7: Doctors diagnosed Mariana with viral meningitis caused by the herpes virus, which is spread through close contact. While all of this was happening, Nicole and Shane were marrying — the couple actually left their wedding early to take their daughter to a Des Moines hospital. Because Mariana's condition was so serious, she was then life-flighted to Iowa City to the University of Iowa Hospital, where she was put on life support, Nicole told WHO TV.
Nicole and Shane both tested negative for the virus, CNN reports, meaning the newborn likely contracted it from a visitor. The virus can be transmitted through someone who has the cold sore virus.

When my son was born in Canada a friend from Taiwan showed up just off the plane, snot running down her face, excited and wanting to see the new baby. No, we didn't let her inside. What goes through peoples brains sometimes.

This was in the late eighties when all those Asian and bird flus were in the news but not clearly understood.

Especially if the adult is from another area the baby doesn't have immunities. Not to even mention if the visiting adult has other lifestyle problems.

This is a sad incident but the couple held THEIR WEDDING one week after the birth, with the one week old in attendance. That's just terrible judgement, wtf.

Even if nobody kissed the baby, just the sheer number of different people with their various germs, viruses, etc. in a confined space for hours poses a danger to a newborn! Even if no one kissed the baby, she could still have gotten very sick from the wedding. With this kind of parenting, who knows what else happened during the first week of her life that contributed to this.

According to the longer dailymail article, this is the woman's fourth child. Shaking my head.

This is a tragic story.

Surely there are parents themselves who get cold sores yet don't sentence their infants to death? Is it merely active cold sores? You would think this would happen more often with all the people running around with cold sores

That is just terrible. Newborn should never be kiss by anyone within the first month, that's my take. Even the mother or the father shouldn't kiss the newborn. The baby doesn't have the immune system to protect all the bacteria that we have on our body.

I thought the same. They are partially to blame.
