It was the price that finally got me to give up smoking.
When the price for a pack of cigarettes went to $10 a pack here in Montreal i could no longer justify spending that kind of money on such a disgusting addiction. Its been 10 years since i smoked that last cigarette and i dont miss it one bit. To all those i subjected to the stench of my smoking i apologize.
Glad I don't smoke; REALLY glad I don't and have never lived in NYC, but if I did smoke and live in NYC, I would certainly make trips every month to a city outside of NYC. Just purchase a month or two supply, and head home to kill myself with cigarettes.
What about booze? I guess that doesn't kill anyone.
Alcohol is enjoyed by the rich just as much as poor people, plus they buy the good stuff not PBR. Poor people are considerably more like to smoke than rich people. Therefore, alcohol = socially acceptable, available in every bar; cigarettes = unacceptable, and not allowed in a bar.

Exactly.
Not that smoking is the smartest idea, but this is just one more reason why New York's appeal has faded so greatly.
The political City busybody "Fathers" and "Mothers" like to micromanage just about every possible aspect of other peoples' lives that they can find, at least the aspects that don't have the trending support of the political winds at the moment.
It wouldn't surprise me to see smoking cigarettes (i.e. tobacco) in public continue to be condemned as heavily as it is and more so. Except for someone getting baked on the sidewalk and blowing around smoke from their marijuana cigarettes, because we know how politically trendy that has become among the "enlightened" elite.
At $13 a pack, cigarettes are getting more expensive than marijuana, milligram per milligram.
One gram of 20% THC cannabis has about 200 mg of the active ingredient. (depends on the strength, but 15-25% is very common)
Cigarettes vary as well, but 12 mg of nicotine is an approximate average. That's 240 mg per pack. Legal medical and recreational weed often sells for $7-10 per gram. It's pretty much a tie now. Cigarettes are going to soon become more expensive than pot.
