My wife wondered what happened to their boat after the rescue? Is it left for salvage or towed along back to harbor? Could the Navy vessel take it aboard? ANyone have a link to more details?
Said in the linked article the boat was left adrift and they hope someone will find and salvage it for them. The article also noted she didn't think it would stay afloat another 24 hours so she was glad she was rescued.
Can't believe these 2 brought those big dogs and didn't have an EPIRB (emergency locator beacon) as they are getting cheap (less than $200). I would have brought a satellite phone also.
Massive incompetence, their boat could have easily been jury rigged and been sailed albeit slowly but safely to land.
Yep. I am in the marine industry, and skilled sailors are resourceful and would have been able to get some sort of sail working. The mast looked fine in the pictures, and they said the spreader failed, but that can be jury rigged. The spreader allows you to put more pressure on the mast, but they could have run less sail, or done something........especially with 5 months time on your hands.
Also, was no one missing them ? Didn't they leave a float plan with friends or relatives to let them know where they were going and how long it should take ? And what about the Epirb? That should have been able to get a message sent. (and what 50 footer doesn't have an Epirb ?)
They and the dogs look way too healthy for 5 months adrift, even if you did have rations. Looks like someone is trying for a book and movie. I bet more comes out on this later on.
I disagree they weren't prepared. They were on a sail boat, the mast was intact why did they not use the sail? If there was a problem with the internal lines they could have rigged it manually. Navigation, did they not know how to manually navigate if their electronics were lost? Why didn't they have an emergency EPIRB or other SOS device? Navigating that kind of distance without seamanship skills is dangerous and foolish you need more then a years worth of granola bars and 3 dogs....
"Broken motor" on a sailboat?
Were they unable to hoist a sail without powered winches?
