I am just playing Devil's advocate here. If she truly is racist, I am sure it will be easy to find piles of evidence against her, but the one epithet, 'Jamaican Barbie' is a pretty thin case and prosecuting someone for a hate crime based on just that would set a bad precedent.

'Jamaican' is a nationality, granted with an overwhelmingly black population. But it is entirely possible that she dislikes Jamaicans or other foreigners, but likes African-Americans.

Just for the record, I want to say that I am, like the posters quoted above, disposed to think race may well have been the motive, and singling out the victim's nationality definitely supports that, but it does not prove it. At least not satisfactorily in my opinion.

Either way, her acts were vile and criminal and I hope she pays dearly for them. I hope the victim can get some peace over having been treated and assaulted the way she was.

In fact, if she had indeed been posting to social media videos of Brochu asleep and snoring, to ridicule her, as Brochu claimed, that on its own would have been a violation of Brochu's privacy, which should have warranted the roommate's being expelled from the dormitory!
Which makes me think she doesn't deserve the bigotry hate crime charge as it wad likely motivated from a feud unrelated to race.

She had a 20k/yr scholarship and she was that stupid.
If you have issues with your roommate talk to them like an adult, go to your RA, switch rooms the next semester (happens all the time).
What she did was disgusting

There is likely more information to the story that we aren't getting because it takes more than a single "Jamaican Barbie" comment to get charged with one.

This has played out before in several cases where someone called another person a cracker or n-word etc. but the actual actions weren't related to race so those charges weren't filed.

ie) Black guy finds out gf is cheating on him with Mexican guy and sees him on street and punches him...calls him something racist while doing it. Assault yes...hate crime no.

I'll let the cops and jury sort this one out, clearly the one girl is a real piece of work.

Absolutely agreed. I think it's time this parentologist's license was revoked.

There was also apparently a comment made about her hair and/or some weave that she had bought. The IG account was cleared out and Jazzy apparently was made aware of it through a 3rd party, so the true extent may only be known to some. Also, FYI, just because the n-word isn't tossed around, that doesn't mean someone/something isn't racist.

What legitimate reason could she have for doing all of this? She claims Jazzy was being hostile but where is the proof? And even if everything she said is true, it is a HUGE leap to punish someone making fun of your snoring by poisoning them with rancid food and your excrement/bodily fluids. She likely sat in that room watching that poor girl get sick and laughed her stupid head off. Forget the hate crime, she needs to be charged with assault/intent to commit bodily harm.

Who even thinks like that? Don't know if it's true, but it's basically the same story as this one, and makes you wonder what kind of brain does that.
I remember that Urban Legend. It was always "My friend's friend went to Mexico and......"

This situation reminds me so much of my own freshman year roommate. She was from Harlem. Stiff, standoffish. Very cold personality and unpleasant. Used heavy coconut skin creams that reeked, insisted windows in our tiny room be kept closed always, kept thermostat as high as it would go. Room was always hot, humid, a coconutty tropical swamp. I couldn't stand it, so by October I ...... moved out. She was pissed off because now she had to pay the phone bill on her own. My next roommate was wonderful, and new dorm was a much better dorm overall.

I realize now that she was probably stiff and unpleasant because she was so out of her depth academically at our ivy league school. She liked the room so warm because she most likely came from living in an overheated Harlem apartment where heat was included in the rent. And she probably was predisposed against me because she was racist and anti-Semitic.

The difference was, I solved my problem by switching out as fast as I could. It never even occurred to me to try to drive her out.
