You obviously don't know too much about Christianity in the early 1500s. He was hardly being mocked. Do some research. His right hand is in a position to bless the viewer looking at the painting.
The clear crystal in his other hand is thought to be quartz rock crystal which in that time period was thought to have very special natural qualities. Da Vinci was known to be fascinated with geology especially crystals.
Da Vinci is regarded as being the absolute most talented painter of all time, not just in the Renaissance. He only to this day has 20 paintings accredited to him. He had a reputation for starting paintings and then never finishing them because he never thought his paintings were good enough to call complete or he would just become bored with them and move on to other projects. He carried the Mona Lisa around with him for many years and never really thought the painting was finished to his satisfaction. The person that hired him to paint it, never got it.
When he moved to France to work for the French King he took the Mona Lisa with him. That's how it ended up in France instead of Italy.
