Yes, religion had everything to do with it. He was raised as a Bible-basher and saw how much influence a religious leader can have on the gullible. His followers believed he was Jesus Christ, God, AND the Devil. And some of them were college educated, so you can't say they were just stupid. They were looking for someone to tell them what to do with themselves, what to believe, and he did that for them.
I just skipped through the thread and didn't read all of the responses, but that guy should have been dead years ago.

Horse ****! That's on Charlie - not religion! He is responsible for all his actions and nobody else, nothing else. He chose to become a monster, Period.
