People who want to claim special access for their service animal do need to answer two very basic questions.
  1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
  2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
While state laws vary, emotional support, therapy, comfort, or companion animals are not considered service animals under the Federal ADA. Because they have not been trained to perform a specific job or task, they do not qualify as service animals under Federal law.

I can see a issue of a line where one of those hostile business owners could put someone on the spot like that and ask what the nature of their disability is and then it becomes having to as Highflying said having to declare it, and then what about sensitive medical information some people don't want announced in the lobby of a restaurant with people waiting for brunch
People don't "get it". People often ask other people the nature of their disability...how it happened or other details. The ADA writes in to different sections protections for people who don't wish to share.

Its funny people on the forum don't think the world is awfully hostile to disabled people when half the people on this thread and other such threads are. They show a distinct lack of understanding and empathy combined.

There is a difference between business owners asking/discriminating, which is illegal, and random people asking because they are clueless or nosy, which is rude but not illegal.
