St. Paul, Minn- The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota is supporting a 14-year-old girl charged with a felony crime for sending an explicit selfie through Snapchat to a teen boy at her school. In a brief the ACLU-MN is challenging the Rice County prosecutors’ attempt to punish the teen for sexting.

“To suggest that a juvenile who sends a sexually explicit selfie is a victim of her own act of child pornography is illogical,” stated Teresa Nelson, Legal Director of the ACLU-MN. “Child pornography laws are supposed to protect minors from predators, and Jane Doe is not a predator.”
What the hell?? I remember there was a similar thing with a 17 year old guy awhile back. How stupid are these people that would charge someone over something so insanely stupid?

law is the law... she broke it, she should be charged, go easy on the punishment, but not enforcing the law based on who committed it would lead to a slippery slope

if enough people got punished for it, parents would learn to teach their kids better

I think the girl should know better, as you said. The law is the law.

No, if she was sending out these images to other people, including other kids, then she has in fact, broken the law.

Hmm. I mentioned the legality of this in a thread about a young woman who took selfies and sent them to some young man.

I do believe there needs to be punishment. Just not to the extent that there is now.

Statement by the girl..."Sexting is common among teens at my school, and we shouldn’t face charges for doing it."

How about a school suspension and XX hours of community service? That would seem reasonable to me. Regardless of what the court system determines, I'm sure her name is out there too, and this is going to follow her on every college and job application.

Her attorneys yap on about no victim, but how old was the guy who received the photo? If he was under legal majority age, then technically he was her victim.

Clearly, a kid with not many smarts in any case.

.
That's what most people are missing here. They don't get it. She was sending nude photos to kids. That's illegal.

So, if other teens, at her school, are jumping off a cliff, she would too? Good grief, she's not even taking responsibility. With the current climate of harassment allegations, she's behaving very stupidly.
